Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) is a hormone regulating growth and development of the reproductive system. It consists of alpha and beta subunits, the alpha subunit being highly similar to those of related hormones and the beta subunit conferring its specific function. Elevated and reduced levels of FSH may be indicative of a variety of different disease states, notably being at a higher level in women who have recently undergone menopause. Levels are reduced in Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.
