Fluorescent labelled Annexin 5 (or??Annexin V) can be used to detect early apoptotic cells. Annexin 5 interacts strongly and specifically with phosphatidylserine (PS) that exposured from plasma membrane in the early event in apoptosis. Therefore, Annexin 5 can be used to detect apoptosis by targeting for the loss of plasma membrane asymmetry. Labeled annexin V can be applied both in flow cytometry and in light microscopy in living culture culture.
